What Is an ATS, and How Do You Get Past It?

You applied to fifty jobs and heard nothing. Not even a rejection. It is easy to take that personally, but a lot of the time a real person never saw your resume at all. An ATS did.

What an ATS is

ATS stands for applicant tracking system. It is software that companies use to collect and manage job applications. It is not a niche tool. By most counts, around 98 percent of Fortune 500 companies use one, and roughly three out of four recruiters rely on one. When you hit apply, your resume goes into this system first, not to a recruiter's inbox.

The ATS reads your resume and tries to pull it apart into fields. Name, job titles, dates, skills, and so on. Recruiters then search and sort inside the system, often by keyword, to decide who to look at. So the system is really a giant, searchable filing cabinet with a search bar on top.

The myths worth ignoring

There is a lot of fear around ATS software, and some of it is overblown. It does not usually auto-reject you based on a secret score. It is mostly a tool that helps recruiters store and find people. A human still makes the call.

What is true is simpler. If the ATS cannot read your resume cleanly, or your resume does not match the words a recruiter searches for, you are much harder to find. And if they cannot find you, you do not exist to them.

How to get through it

You do not need tricks. You need a resume the software can read and a resume that matches the job. Here is the short list:

• Keep the format clean. Fancy tables, columns, text boxes, and graphics often confuse the parser. Your name can end up in the wrong field, or a whole section can vanish. Stick to a simple, single-column layout.
• Use normal section headings. Label things "Work Experience," "Education," and "Skills." Cute headings like "Where I Made My Mark" may look nice, but the system may not know what they mean.
• Match the job's words, honestly. If the posting asks for "project management" and you have done it, use that phrase, not a clever synonym. Do not stuff keywords you cannot back up, but do speak the same language as the role.
• Save it in the right file type. A clean Word file or a proper PDF is safest. Avoid images of text, since the parser cannot read a picture.
